About HomegrownScientists.org

William Finney, the host of this site, welcomes you to HomegrownScientists.org!
HomegrownSciences.org was started in August of 2007 to fill the need for a resource for materials, guidance and advice for parents homeschooling their children in the sciences, those looking for enrichment for children that are attending school and for anyone who is looking to gain a better understanding of what science is and how it is used in the world around us.  We all know that children learn best from their parents, but sometimes as a parent you need someone to help you understand, so that you can explain it to your children.
Why did we start HomegrownScientists.org?  There was an article in the April 16, 2007 issue of Chemical and Engineering News, a weekly publication of the American Chemical Society that described the lack of chemistry education materials available for parents homeschooling their children.  This article also highlighted the larger issue of a lack in general of science education materials for homeschooling and that a major issue for parents providing a science education to their children was their own uncertainty of how to approach the subject.  This is where HomegrownScientists.org will fill this need.  There is an ever increasing amount of "science" being used in the world around us to explain why we should eat what we eat, to the medicines that we take to what we put in our cars.  It is increasingly important for everyone to have a better appreciation of science and a better understanding of what science can and cannot tell us.
Through our experiments we hope that HomegrownScientists.org you will learn to be a scientist by learning:
  • How to look at the world around you in an objective and systematic manner.
  • How to ask questions based on your observations.
  • How to construct experiments to gather data, basic pieces of scientific information.
  • How to use that data to answer your question in a meaningful way
We also hope to increase your awareness of scientific progress around the world, helping you understand current topics in science and how to better understand the science in the world around you.
